Get Around Town with Ease Using the Best Transportation Apps

Finding the right public transportation options to get around the city you’re in can be seriously confusing. Thankfully, with bus trackers like CTA bus tracker and MTA bus time, you can actually use public transportation apps to find all the transportation schedules you need.

I discovered this while looking for a solution to the fact that I was constantly showing up to work late because I had no idea when the next bus or train was going to arrive at my stop. As I was searching the web, I came across a list of the top 10 public transportation apps on a website called AppGrooves. I decided to check them out and was so relieved to find that they actually work – I’m not late anymore! I thought I would categorize my favorite apps below so you can get a feel for what kind of transportation app might work best for you.

  1. Public Transportation Apps with Live Mobile Tracking

Whether you’re looking to ride the bus, train, taxi, or the subway, there is a really diverse number of ways to get around your favorite cities. Over the course of recent history, public transportation apps have really revolutionized our ability to track our favorite routes to work, to school, to the grocery, to home, and more. It’s important that we’re able to discover real-time information about when our transportation will arrive so we aren’t wasting time.

Apps: Moovit, OneBusAway, NextBus

Moovit is an international tool that will help you get the public transportation you are looking for in cities around the world. Not only does this app help users in the US, but you can take it with you to Spain, Europe, Greece, Italy, France, Australia, and Canada. Access all of the live tracking you need to find schedules for local bus routes, trains, subways and more! Just keep in mind that some users have reported the app occasionally shutting down or failing to load information. A quick fix is to simply refresh or reload the app to find the information you need.

For those who ride the bus often, OneBusAway offers real-time updates on where the buses are located, when you can expect them, and where they are headed next. Users report that bus arrival times are very accurate. This being said, the app’s reach is currently limited, so you can only access bus route information from Rogue Valley, Oregon, San Diego, California, Seattle/Tacoma/Puget Sound, Washington, Tampa Bay, Florida, Washington, D.C., and the York Region Transit, Canada for the time being.

NextBus is another solid option for those who use their bus lines daily and want to save their preferred routes. Name your own bus stops, create routes, and track these routes for a more efficient way to get around town. NextBus has a really good overall reputation for being dependable, but there have been occasional reports that downloading the app for the first time can be a little tricky. If you’re having difficulty, simply uninstall and reinstall the app. It only takes a few seconds and you’ll be on your next bus in no time!

  1. Public Transportation Apps That Offer Multiple Modes of Transportation

When you need to get around town fast, finding the best route using a combination of public transportation modes can be confusing. The last thing you want or need is to get lost. I’ve selected my favorite public transportation apps that offer multiple transportation modes for you to get where you need to go faster than with just one.

Apps: Citymapper, Transit

Citymapper already has several awards under its belt from public transportation organizations and technology experts alike! Various transit combinations are updated in real time, so you are able to find the quickest route Options are then summarized neatly on one page so you can easily select what you need. Citymapper maps out your complete route from beginning to end; even helping you select the best subway car! Just keep in mind that if you need to travel between cities, you will have to manually switch metro areas when crossing from one town to the next. Thankfully, the transition is seamless, and with a great user interface that is easy to use, you won’t waste any time!

Looking for a way to get around during your next trip across Europe? With over 125 cities in its database, Transit covers all your transportation needs around the globe. All transportation modes are covered, including bus, train, metro, and bike, and it is easy to compare different combinations of these. Transit walks you through each step until you arrive at your destination. The only potential con is that, unlike Citymapper, Transit is not yet available on smartwatches. But, on the plus side, all of Transit’s features are available for free with no ads!
